AdBlue

Overview

AdBlue® is the VDA registered trademark for Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5% that is used with the Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust of diesel vehicles. It is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in de-mineralized water that is clear, non-toxic and safe to handle. It is non-explosive, non-flammable nor harmful to the environment.

Average consumption of AdBlue® in Heavy Goods Vehicles is generally 5% of diesel use, while in cars it is approximately 1 litre of AdBlue® every 1000 kilometre.

Description

Uses

AdBlue is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in de-mineralised water that is clear, non-toxic and safe to handle.

It is non-explosive, non-flammable nor harmful to the environment.

AdBlue is classified under the minimum risk category of transportable fluids.

It is neither a fuel, nor a fuel additive and needs to be used in a dedicated tank in your vehicle. It is replenished in a similar way to refueling diesel.

AdBlue combined with SCR offers you a fuel efficient solution, with lower CO2 emissions than competitive solutions. All major European and North American truck manufacturers currently offer SCR equipped models.

Characteristics

  • Clear and odourless liquid classified as non-toxic and safe to handle
  • SG (specific gravity) is 1.09 typical
  • Recommended shelf life is 12 months
  • Freezing point – 11 °C
  • Hydrolysis starts at 30 °C
  • Crystallisation upon drying can cause corrosion and spillages should be cleaned using water
  • Corrosive to iron, copper, bronze and some aluminum alloys
  • Spill Free systems are available and should ALWAYS be used to minimise risk

SCR Technology

Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR is an after treatment technology that requires the use of an Aqueous Urea solution known as AdBlue®, to reduce NOx emissions. All major diesel-engined vehicles manufacturers have decided to use this technology to meet the new emission legislation on NOx emissions (Please check vehicle handbook to ascertain if you require AdBlue®). SCR is the most cost effective solution to meet NOx emission standards.

The main components of the SCR system are the SCR catalyst, the AdBlue® injection unit, the AdBlue® tank and the AdBlue® dosing control unit. AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust pipe, in front of the SCR catalyst, downstream of the engine. Heated in the exhaust it decomposes into ammonia and CO2.   When the NOx reacts inside the catalyst with the ammonia, the harmful NOx molecules in the exhaust are converted to harmless nitrogen and water.

Application

To comply with Euro 6 regulations, the majority of new diesel-powered vehicles built since 2016 use SCR technology to insert small amounts of AdBlue© into the car’s exhaust gases. When this combines with exhaust emissions, it creates harmless nitrogen and oxygen by breaking down the harmful mono-nitrogen oxides inside the diesel exhaust. This technology has been used in buses and heavy-duty trucks for a long time, so its success has been proven, and its reliability is better than ever.

Benefits

  • Reduces mono-nitrogen oxide emissions
  • Cost-effective and safe
  • For Euro 4,5 and 6 diesel engines
  • All manufacturer approvals
