The pressing need to reduce emission from automobiles has led to evolving engine technology such as the growth in the number of electric, hybrid and downsized engines arriving to the market. Whilst laws and public thinking ensure that engines need to become cleaner, greener, and more efficient, most drivers still want improved performance of the engine. To meet both demands’ car manufacturers have further developed the electric range but have in particular developed the thermal engines (Hybrids, Petrol & Diesel) further.
Downsizing these engines and combining them with a turbocharger is one of the more effective approaches to improve fuel economy without impacting power, coupled with further injection and depolluting technologies helps to make these engines greener and improve performance. However, with this new technology comes new requirements on the performance of the engine oils.
The pressing need to assist in the reduction of emission even further and the need to overcome new phenomenon associated with the more extreme operating conditions from supercharging smaller engines, such as Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) which restricts the maximum engine performance and lower emission benefit has resulted in the development by oil companies of the next generation of engine oils.
Just as before there is a wide choice of the new generation oils and the main viscosities created are the SAE 0W16 and the SAE 0W20 engine oil viscosities. These lower viscosities offer a wider operating temperature offering better performance in climates such as Ireland which more lubricity at lower temperatures offers better performance and less friction. They offer better engine protection to older type 5W30, 5W20 oils and help with sludge build-up, fuel consumption and fuel economy.
As the car manufacturers come to the market with their new engines, they each have different requirements from the engine oils and as such seek to have specific formulations to achieve the best performance of their engine. The basic requirement of all manufacturers will be an oil with an international specification ACEA, or API and the more demanding manufacturers will have their own specification that the oil will need to meet/be approved for also i.e., VW 508. ACEA c5 or API GF-6 are the very latest in international specification and oils with these standards offer the best protection for these engine types.
Total Energies is one global oil company which has been working on a range of oils to suit these new more demanding requirements and they have developed their new synthetic range Total Quartz XTRA oils. The Quartz XTRA range has been specifically developed with eco-science technology to improve engine life and efficiency, optimise engine care and lower fuel consumption.
In other words, Total Quartz XTRA engine oil with Eco-Science technology not only removes impurities and protects engines, but also provide additional benefits such as significant fuel economy and optimal engine care for maximised performance.
The antioxidant additives in Total Quartz Xtra products allow the lubricant molecules to maintain their performance over time and make the product more resistant to the physical and chemical degradation exacerbated by the extreme conditions of the super charged engines mentioned earlier. This minimises oil oxidation while maintaining fuel savings and engine performance throughout the product’s lifespan.
Total Quartz XTRA range new generation engine oils are now available in Ireland from Total Energies Irish distribution partner Finol Oils and there are two types available: Total Quartz 9000 XTRA range for vehicles without particulate filters and Total Quartz INEO Xtra range for those with particulate filters. This advanced 0W16 & 0W20 synthetic oil range comes with ACEA C5, API CF–5 & API CF-6 international standard as well OEM approvals from all the leading vehicle manufacturers such as VW 508/509, Ford 947-B1 and 952-A1, Volvo VCC RBSO-2AE, MB-Approval 220.71, Hyundai/Kia plus many more.
The ranges are a perfect fit for Hybrid engines also and for some manufactures the product is backwords compatible with their entire fleet.
